Public Performances

2009 marked our 20th year of existance. Since 1989 we have performed 200 events, involved 22 cast members, and shared and enacted a couple of 1000 stories and tales.

In 2010 , as is customary, we shall begin our annual cycle of performances with a celebration of International Women's Day.

It's that time of the year, the Bellingen Playback Theatre company invites women and girls to attend the very popular annual celebration for International Women's Day, Sunday 7th of March. The performance this year is themed, “All the time in the world...” and we have got it, haven't we, time?

Hmm, that's what I thought as I was lying comfortably, as mermaids do, in timeless bliss under shading trees listening to the ocean gently wash over a sandy shore and two birds somewhere calling... the to do list, the to do list. Arr, a sense of rising panic hit me because I was reminded of all the items still on my own neatly written list. No more wasting time, back to it:

What is time? A measurement on Earth as humans know it, sun seasons, moon tides, tick tick tick tock, Greenwich mean, but not including that tiny little bit of something between past and future. What does time mean? Punctuality, can't stay in bed any longer, schedules, busy busy busy, a sit down, cuppa and a nice bit of fish. What causes time? All that motion and those forces created as the universe expands - wonder if humans have got that right, shall ask Amphitrite.

Is time a dimension? Research – watch all episodes of Dr. you know who. What does time do? Crawls, passes, runs out, speeds, flies, stretches, curves and cycles, and generally misbehaves as we create history, memories, stories and tales, tails – that reminds me - back to the ocean before moon rise. Playback theatre will create a unique time and relative dimension in space at the Bellingen Memorial Hall led by the Conductor who will facilitate the sharing of experiences, dilemmas or events from the lives of the Audience Members. We shall endeavour to find more answers to these fishy questions.

The intrepid actors and musician will spontaneously play back the stories by bravely leaping in and using various dramatic techniques including improvised dialogue, movement, song, and dance. We shall swim with storytelling into the unique space of improvised theatre. Come, we'll have...
